A recent report from Compare My Move in the UK has shown that the average cost of a household removal has fallen by 4.1% in quarter two, at the same time as home removal enquiries have risen 13.25% despite a small dip in June.
Dave Sayce, Managing Director of Compare My Move, commented: “Although removal enquiries have dipped slightly in June, we don’t expect this trend to continue throughout the summer. We expect an increase in enquiries throughout Q3 as the summer months are notoriously popular for people moving house. Because of this, we do expect the average price people pay for removal companies to increase in the next quarter, as demand increases [based on what happened in 2023]. We have seen in previous years that Q3 is the most expensive month for removals and 2024 seems to be no different.”
What Mr Sayce says is logical, however there is a contradiction in that prices have fallen during the first half of the year when demand was increasing. This could be simply the limitations of the data. However it could also be that the moving industry has failed to recognise the trend and continued to compete on price even when it might not be necessary?
