Painting the town green in Dublin

A report by Steve Jordan on the Young Movers Conference in the home of the craic.

The first night welcome party at the Gravity Bar If anyone would like a master class on how to organise a business conference, they need look no further than the Young Movers Conference in Dublin last April, organised by Careline. With one exception, it was as close to perfect as I have seen.

Well over 200 young movers, and a few who were young at heart, attended the event at the Clayton Hotel in Dublin. It’s a place that is familiar to conference goers, having previously hosted the BAR event (as the Burlington). It works well as a venue, which is fortunate as it’s the only hotel big enough in the city. It’s true that the bar staff were a little disengaged, almost unheard of in Ireland, but something that happened at the end of the conference was enough to allow me to forgive almost anything.  More of that later.

The first night welcome party was held at the Gravity Bar at the Guinness Storehouse, that gives a 360° view of the city as well as serving ample quantities of the black nectar.  What better way to start a conference for a bunch of youngsters than by having a party in a brewery.  There were, of course, the anticipated number of sore heads the following morning.

Day two (Friday) saw the one and only business session.  Part one was a panel discussion hosted by me, with movers and Relocation Management Companies, to explore the relationship between the two.  It worked well and discussed some sensitive issues but, I will report on it fully in our July issue, so please keep an eye out for it.  Part two was a presentation by FEDEMAC which didn’t work so well. I’ll get to that later.

That was it for business in the traditional sense.  The rest of the conference was dedicated to allowing people to have fun together, meet people, make friends and develop relationships that, as history has shown, are likely to survive a lifetime.  This, Careline organised to perfection ...
