Build it and they will come

An interview by Steve Jordan with Ray daSilva - a man who does not wait for approval, does not play it safe; he believes in his instincts, takes a lead and is delighted when others follow.

Use it or lose it

It is a bit of a cliché but the reason clichés become so over used is because they often mean exactly what they say. Use it or lose it is exactly what I mean when it comes to The Mover magazine.

Are you up for the Peniuk Challenge?

It’s not as frightening as it seems. You don’t need to run a marathon or cycle half-way around America to qualify. No, the Peniuk Challenge is a new initiative from Walt Peniuk from Premier International in Toronto to encourage people to get out of their comfort zone, do something different, amaze themselves and raise a little money for charity at the same time.

The Sirelo story

Steve Jordan interviews the people behind Sirelo, a website that has caused anger amongst movers worldwide.

Disrupting the industry?

I have two stories in this issue that focus on market disruption: take a look at Shift on page 8 and Sirelo on page 18.  They are doing different things but, in their own way, have the potential to disrupt the market.  I heard about both these organisations on the grapevine and, as I am sometimes a little nosy, toddled off to see them both in London and The Netherlands respectively. You should read the stories and form your own opinion about what they are doing.  As always, I will be very interested to hear your opinions; please keep them fit for publication and please don’t shoot the messenger.

OMNI braves the weather and talks business in Seville

Seville in south-west Spain was the venue for the 2019 OMNI conference. Despite the inclemency of the weather (very unusual for Andalusia in springtime), the friendship between the delegates was as warm as ever.

The venue was the Alfonso XIII hotel, a short amble from the city centre, the Guadalquivir river, the Seville University and the old tobacco factory that was the inspiration for the opera Carmen.

McGimpsey Removals breaks the male succession tradition

It is something of a tradition in family-run removals businesses for sons to take over from their fathers as retirement approaches. For daughters however, that succession is far less common in what is often still seen as a male dominated profession. Deputy Editor David Jordan spoke to one company which is bucking the trend.

Tackling the lump sum market in Thailand

An interview with Kris Snidvongs of Thai Movers in Bangkok, by Steve Jordan

The rise of the lump sum mover, someone who is being assigned to a new role overseas by their company but receives a lump sum to cover expenses rather than their company handling everything for them, has spawned a new breed of moving company in recent years. One such company is Thai Movers in Bangkok, a small company serving the specific needs of the private and lump sum corporate market.

Time for change

Steve Jordan asks, with prices in the industry more depressed than ever before, is it time movers refused to play the game anymore?

In my 45+ years in this industry I don’t believe there has ever been a time when prices have been under such pressure.  There seems to be a ‘perfect storm’ with pressure coming from the corporations and the RMCs, from the rise of the lump-sum culture, the reduction in average shipment sizes, and the ubiquitous Internet that has allowed private customers to compare prices at the click of a button, with very little regard for service quality, and ride the market in a race to the bottom.  So, what can be done about it?

Volvo Trucks - Automation – The big change

We will be one billion more people on earth by 2030 – trade and transports need to keep up. As cities grow, congestion, pollution and strains on the traffic system will increase. The transport and logistic industry will play a major role in tackling global challenges, and automation will be a key factor – including the use of autonomous vehicles. For Volvo Trucks, these developments are firmly human-centric.

Volvo Trucks - Automation – Driving into the future

Automation will revolutionize the transport industry – it will improve productivity, lower fuel consumption, and optimize traffic management and route planning among other things. For drivers it will increase safety, improve working conditions and in many cases introduce new ways of working. Automation is not about killing jobs – there will still be a need for skilled drivers in the future.
