Edinburgh-based Broughton Removals has capped its 50th year of service by being crowned Scottish Family Business of the Year at the National Family Business Awards organised by Family Business United (FBU).

The ceremony, held at the end of June, was broadcast digitally due to the coronavirus pandemic. Various category winners were announced across the UK, with Broughton scooping the Scottish title.

Broughton Director Jo Munro said, “This award means such a lot to us and is real recognition for all the hard work that our family and the wider team have put in over the years to help make the business the success that it is today. This award would not be possible without our fantastic staff, or the endeavour over the years of our family.”

In 1970, founder Sonny Munro set up his dream business with two vehicles – the first purchased for only £80 – originally in the capital’s Broughton Street. From such humble beginnings, he set out to give Edinburgh a removal company that offered the highest quality service at the best price. Five decades later, Broughton’s vision remains the same.

The company is now based at a purpose-built facility in Leith where Jo and her brother, Kris, oversee a team of 18 staff and 14 vehicles.

“It has been a tough year, and this is a real boost for us as a business, not to mention the morale of the team,” added Jo. “I’m so pleased for my Mum and Dad too, as it all started with them and we all know that there are times when running a family firm is like being on a rollercoaster.”
