In March this year Britannia Movers turned 40. Over those 40 years the group, which grew from a conglomerate of domestic movers in the UK, has grown to become a major player in the international moving sector.
Today, many of the founding member companies remain in membership, though it’s often the children and even grandchildren of the elder statesmen now holding the reins.
Britannia developed as the industry changed. The installation of a national group and a central hub to consolidate the shipping operation was an initial stepping-stone, before further evolution into the corporate moving market in the 1990s. Fast forward to present day and Britannia now has a global network of overseas partners and a portfolio of corporate clients from a variety of industry sectors.
Over the years Britannia’s central office has also moved around with Stourbridge in the West Midlands, New Malden and then Croydon in Greater London all being called home before the move to the current main office in Merstham just off the M25 in Surrey in 2016. The Britannia network itself has grown to become one of the largest moving groups in the UK with overseas members in Spain, Capetown and Johannesburg enhancing the international profile of the group.
Alas, the global pandemic has stifled plans for Britannia’s 40th anniversary celebrations. An overseas conference (a staple of the Britannia calendar) and numerous promotional events have had to be put on hold for more suitable times. Nevertheless, plans remain for celebrations later in the year once circumstances permit. In the meantime, there are a range of local festivities planned around the network as well as fundraising efforts designed to celebrate Britannia’s 40th landmark, while benefitting worthy causes connected to the wide range of business partnerships Britannia holds.
Britannia says that achieving longevity and stability through many challenges to the moving industry over 40 years is no small task. It puts its success down to the dedication of the staff across the Britannia network, the global relationships that have been built, commercial partnerships and goodwill in a wonderful and unique industry that has allowed Britannia to flourish and look ahead to another 40 years of growth and a successful future.
