Iraq introduces curfew to limit spread of COVID-19

Mar 16 | 2020

Move One in Iraq has provided the following statement regarding the pandemic.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Health has announced a 72-hour extension to the current curfew in place across Erbil and Sulaymaniyah as of 00:00 Monday, 16th March to 23:59 Wednesday, 18 March 2020. No travel is permitted between or within the cities in an attempt to curb the spread of the COVID-19.

During this 72 hour period all land border crossings (Parwez Khan, Haji Omeran, Bashmakh and Ibrahim Khalil) will be closed for civilian movements in order to allow the flow of goods and necessities into the region.

Erbil and Sulaymaniyah International Airports will remain open but with limited passenger flight schedules. Cargo flights will continue to arrive and airport handling and storage will be available until the citywide curfews are lifted and goods can be delivered in due course.

The Mosul Authorities have also imposed a 72-hour curfew across the entire Governorate and a similar decision is anticipated by the Kirkuk Governorate too.

Baghdad Authorities have announced a week long curfew starting 23:00 Monday, 16 March. The Basra Governorate is yet to make a decision on the exact dates, but it is expected that they too will announce curfews as of Tuesday, 17th March onwards.

Um Qasr port remains operational with reduced working hours by some port authorities and private companies.

Safwan border crossing remains closed until further notice. Trebil border crossing remains open.

We continue to monitor the situation closely through our teams on the ground in all major cities across Iraq.
