This year marks the 50th anniversary of Mac’s Truck Sales. Deputy Editor, David Jordan took a trip up the M1 to Huddersfield to visit the family behind one of the most successful removal truck suppliers in the UK.
This was my second trip to Mac’s Truck’s impressive headquarters in West Yorkshire. The first was in 2017, a couple of weeks after the opening of their shiny new purpose-built factory on the outskirts of Huddersfield. Back then it was easy to find a parking spot in the newly painted bays in front of the office building, but today most of the spots were full and the yard outside the factory, that five years ago had been almost empty, was crammed with trucks waiting to be collected by their proud new owners. Obviously, business was booming.
Marketing Manager Anson Chu met me in reception and introduced me to Mac’s charismatic founder Alec McDade and his son Adrian who is now managing director. I’d
met Alec on my last visit and he’d told me about working for his father’s removals company in Walton on Thames during the 1950s, helping out in the school holidays and sometimes during term time if they were short of men.
Alec explained, “Life in those pre-Ofsted days was very different from today ..."
