FIDI has completed its annual conference in Edinburgh.
The event enjoyed good attendance of over 600 delegates including representatives from influential organisations such as Parsifal, The World Bank and the US State Department. Other trade groups were also represented including IAM and EuRA.
The conference had a distinctly ‘sustainable’ theme with obvious efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the conference itself ( such as the exclusion of ‘goodie bags', rewarding those who travelled in a more sustainable way, and the elimination of plastic materials where possible) and subject matter for the business discussions focussed on sustainability topics. These included keynote speaker Lucas Simons offering his message that it is only possible to change the outcome by changing the rules of the game; and a presentation of the new FIDI Carbon Calculator that helps members establish the environmental impact of their operations. Other panel discussions included dealing with crises both within companies and global events; and how to recruit and retain staff in a post-COVID era.
As always the business was supported by a rich programme of social events including a reception at Edinburgh Castle, city tours and much whisky tasting.
One nice touch was the inclusion of the Doune Pipe Band, including the industry’s own Phil Stewart from Clark and Rose, to open the event and the Board’s wearing of highland dress for the opening and closing events. The addressing of the haggis at the gala dinner added another impressive traditional element.
Please see our full report and summaries of the business presentations in future issues of The Mover.
