In The Mover, July 2024, we published an article entitled 'Achieving FAIM in Venezuela'. The story was about Mudanzas Internacionales Global that had achieved a flawless FAIM audit under the most arduous of conditions.
In the story, Zenaida Romero, General Manager of the operation in Caracas, reflected on the forthcoming election that was due to take place on 28 July. She said that the election would be crucial for the country’s future with profound implications for its political stability, economic recovery, and international relations. She explained that while the opposition candidate appeared to be in a strong position, whether the incumbent President Nicolás Maduro prevailed would depend on several factors, including the fairness of the electoral process, voter turnout, and the ability of the opposition to maintain unity.
Since then, we have the result: Maduro won. So we asked Zenaida for her initial reaction. “Despite the results indicating otherwise, the electoral authority declared Maduro as the winner,” she said. “This outcome has led to widespread disillusionment among the populace, who feel deceived by the process. As a result, significant protests have erupted across the country, with people taking to the streets to denounce electoral fraud.”
She explained that the international community is now actively addressing this issue. Meanwhile, the government has responded to the protests with severe measures, including repression and arrests, aimed at suppressing dissents and intimidating opponents which, she said, represent the majority of the country. “There is considerable uncertainty regarding whether Maduro will acknowledge the electoral loss and address the declining popularity of his regime. Alternatively, he may persist in ignoring the will of the voters, which could further confirm the authoritarian nature of his government.”
So the position in Venezuela remains uncertain. If you have shipments to or from Venezuela, or would like to learn more about the political or market situation in the country, please contact Zenaida directly.
