A recent notice from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has advised that from 1 January 2019, some types of trucks will fall within legislation that will require manufacturers to declare HGV CO2 values when selling on the EU market.

The European Commission has developed a test method to measure fuel CO₂ emissions from trucks based on the Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool (VECTO).

Cars and vans have long been subject to CO₂ regulations, with both sectors working to meet long-term targets set by the European Union. Since 2013, there has been an EU strategy to bring trucks over 7.5 tonnes into a similar regime.
