Work will begin later this year to convert 8.9km of Central London’s roads to 20mph maximum speed. The work will be completed in early 2020.
"Every single death on London's streets is one too many so I'm really pleased that Londoners have backed our plans to introduce a 20mph speed limit on TfL (Transport for London) roads within the Congestion Charge Zone and at Aldgate Gyratory," said Sadiq Khan, London Mayor.
The lower speed limit will be supported by raised pedestrian crossings in seven locations and all speed cameras will be recalibrated accordingly. A public consultation concluded that the new regulations would encourage more people to walk and cycle. TfL intends to introduce lower speed limits on a further 150km of roads in the next five years.
