DVSA announces future UK roadworthiness testing plans

DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) has announced how the roadworthiness testing of lorries and trailers in the UK will be managed in the coming months. From September 2020 to March 2021 a three-month extension will apply for all vehicles and trailers.

A new 12-month exemption is possible for ‘Low Risk’ vehicles – those under two years old or operators with Earned Recognition or ‘Green’ operators that meet a DVSA score target. Certificates of Temporary Exemption (CTEs) will be issued for vehicles and trailers due for test up to March 2021.

For those vehicles defined as ‘Low Risk’ by DVSA, 12-month Temporary exemptions will apply. 

Dates for these vehicles will move as follows:

•             March 2020 tests (those exempted to September 2020) to March 2021

•             April 2020 tests to April 2021

•             May 2020 tests to May 2021

•             June 2020 tests to June 2021

•             July 2020 tests to July 2021

•             August 2020 tests to August 2021

•             September 2020 tests to September 2021

•             October 2020 tests to October 2020

•             November 2020 tests to November 2021

•             December 2020 tests to December 2021

•             January 2021 tests to January 2022

•             February 2021 tests to February 2022

•             March 2021 tests to March 2022

The Road Haulage Association said it welcomes the clarity of the DVSA’s announcement but remains concerned about the availability of roadworthiness tests.
