Richard Turfitt, Senior Traffic Commissioner in the UK, speaking at the BAR Conference encouraged operators to report companies that they knew were overloading vehicles, especially the under 3.5 tonne vans not falling under Operator’s License regulations. Richard’s responsibilities include the licensing of the operators of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) in the UK.
He made the request when questioned by BAR members about his organisation’s ability to more rigorously enforce regulations to stop unregulated operators from undercutting users of larger vehicles that do require an Operator’s License.
He said that the enforcement agencies gathered a lot of ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) data but needed legitimate companies to report rogue operators so that enforcement could be targeted.
