The Mover has learned this morning of the death of a good friend, Steve Lewis. Steve died of a heart attack yesterday. He was just 56 years old.
Steve was a proud Welshman who had become part of the moving scene in Asia over many years. His career there started with Andy Mak at Asian Express in Hong Kong before moving on to Santa Fe in Malaysia and then as the APAC manging director for Unigroup. He subsequently became a consultant for Voerman in the Netherlands and started his own company, My Moving Mobility, in Kuala Lumpur.
He also gave much of his time to the industry, working as a trainer for the FIDI Academy, with the Moving and Mobility Standards Alliance (MMSA) to develop standards for the way data is handled, and was the chairman of the IAM’s Hall of Honor, recognising individuals for their leading roles in the industry.
Steve Jordan, Editor of The Mover, said that the tributes had already started coming into the office. “Steve was not only a leading light in the industry, he was also a smashing guy,” he said. “He was great fun to be around, always quick with a joke and a lark. He was also very knowledgeable and often contributed to the magazine. I really enjoyed his company, he always lit up the room. I will miss him, and I am sure those friends who were even closer to him that I was, will find his loss devastating.”
Earlier this year Steve acted as MC at the FIDI conference in Cannes. His ‘larger than life’ style was clearly demonstrated when he led the audience in a chorus of the song I’m still standing to recognise the passing of COVID. The cruellest irony.
The Mover will be publishing a fuller tribute to Steve in the October issue.
