US Transportation Command’s (USTRANSCOM) Defense Personal Property Management Office (DPMO), in coordination with the military services and US Coast Guard, has said that it is adjusting its plan for how military household goods will be moved during the 2025 moving season.
USTRANSCOM awarded initial shipments under the Global Household Goods Contract (GHC) beginning in April 2024, after ensuring the information technology was tested and ready. The organisation said, in a press release, that throughout most of 2024 the current GHC prime contractor, HomeSafe, met expectations and received positive customer feedback on their services. However, as USTRANSCOM increased shipment volume in late 2024, missed pickups and deliveries and other issues, led USTRANSCOM leaders to take corrective actions.
Andy Dawson, DPMO Director, said USTRANSCOM’s overriding focus is on delivering a quality experience for servicemembers and families moving in the 2025 peak moving season. “We’re leveraging all available tools to make sure servicemembers and their families receive a quality move in 2025, whether that’s under the legacy move system or GHC, and regardless of their destination,” he said.
According to Andy Dawson, planning and communication remain critical aspects for a successful move. “Servicemembers should work with their local transportation offices and commands to plan for their move based on any unique circumstances or requirements they may have,” he said. “In addition to reviewing the tools and information we have online, they should be speaking early and often with the transportation offices to make sure their needs are heard and understood.”
Gen Randall Reed, Commander, USTRANSCOM, commented: “Transitioning from the legacy system to GHC requires a very deliberate process and we know there have been issues. This is a necessary journey however, to deliver what will be an improved moving experience.”
Gen Reed stressed the needs and expectations of servicemembers and their families remain the driving factor behind the transition to GHC. “My focus is locked on our military community. It has been a bumpy road at times for our men and women in uniform, but GHC is not defined by a single company, nor will its effectiveness be defined by numbers on a sheet of paper. GHC will ultimately be defined by the experiences of our servicemembers and their families. We owe them our best and I am determined to see they get the quality experience they deserve.”
USTRANSCOM oversees the deployment and sustainment of US forces worldwide. Headquartered in Belleville, Illinois, USTRANSCOM transports by air, land, and sea to deliver national security, and is also entrusted with managing the global relocation of military members’ household goods and privately owned vehicles.
